Anonymous charity (in Hebrew “Matan BaSeter”). Communal responsibility is one of the basic laws in Jewish tradition. The Jerusalem Orthodox community, which is relatively poor, is supported by a large number of private organizations as well as by public charitable societies. These societies provide for needy individuals (fuel, clothing, shelter etc.) as well as for communal welfare facilities such as education and health. Most of the donations for these purposes are collected in the many alms boxes which are built into the stone façades of houses in the Orthodox neighborhoods.
