Longing and Yearning. Jews always had their hearts set on Jerusalem as a unique mystical focus of longing. In their prayers and traditions they mourned its destruction, and expressed their hopes of fulfilling their dream, to return to Jerusalem and to re-establish their religious national identity. Some of these traditions, and cravings for and the fulfillment of dreams, are engraved in different patterns and motifs on the city’s stone façades.
