Courtyard Layout. The urban architectural identity of most Jewish Orthodox neighborhoods is based on a courtyard layout: single family row-houses and large communal housing blocks, forming a protective wall around the courtyards. Narrow passages, with gateways, which were closed at night, lead into the courtyards, where the synagogues, Yeshiva buildings and public water cisterns are located.
