Europe in Jerusalem. Beginning in the mid-19th century the European powers, mainly Germany, Russia, France and England, initiated building monumental religious institutional structures in Jerusalem, which were designed in eclectic styles, prevalent in Europe at the time. These styles echoed the native architecture of the different European countries, and were thus a dominant factor in determining the physical-visual presence of each power in the Holy City.
