Protective & Decorative Feature. Most Arab mansions, from the late Ottoman period (1850 1917), were built within large courtyards, protected from their surroundings by high walls. The gates were a protective necessity, as well as a decorative and symbolic architectural element emphasizing the families’ socio-economic status. Most of the distinctive gateways are in the Ethiopian Quarter and in Musrara and Sheikh Jarrah neighborhoods.
