Rural and Precast Screens. By the late 20th century, many of the traditional decorative wooden screens (mashrabiya) and decorative hollow clay pipe screens (kizan) were being replaced by modular precast units. The concrete or clay screens, mass produced in a variety of patterns, are relatively cheap and easy to install. Now they are common not only in the Old City, in villages around Jerusalem, but also in other parts of the city.
