Traditional Clay Screens. Hollow clay pipe screens (kizan) were built for both functional and aesthetic reasons, to enable flow of air and privacy. Their formation was designed in a variety of decorative patterns, the most common being the triangular formation. Today the original clay screens, which were widespread mainly in the Old City during the 19th and early 20th centuries, are scarce. Nowadays, modern variations of the original formations are cast in concrete.
