The distinct Mamluk gateways have a specific architectural identity with their high portals, topped by recessed vaults, decorated with stalactite formations (muqarnas). The Madrasa al-Ashrafiyya, the most beautiful and grandiose in Jerusalem, was built in 1482 on the West side of the Haram al-Sharif.
