Ornate Gateposts. Arab houses built during the British Mandate period (1918-1948) had elaborately designed gateposts and ornate ironwork. The gateways defined the threshold between domestic privacy and the public domain and also emphasized the socio-economic status of the house owners. Many examples are in Talbieh, Katamon and Ba’qa Neighborhoods. Similar gateposts were rare in Jewish domestic houses.
